Heroes Named John

It occurred to me during the release of John Wick 2 there are quite a few heroes in action films that have the name John. At first, I thought it was just Hollywood writers being lazy, but I think that is a little unfair to say. John is a very common name and I think naming a character John, the writer is trying to normalize the character to the audience. The name John is one of the oldest and overly used names next to James. It’s even used to identify a unknown corpse, John Doe. Of course there are a ton of John’s we know and least everyone knows one John is real life or even more. Let’s not forget about the biblical use of the name and how that carries over to families. John means grace and mercy of the Lord, and I think that’s where a lot of this stems from with religious families naming their kids after Saints and Apostles. John is just an average guys name and it doesn’t stand out at all. Maybe that’s what writers are going for…or maybe they are just lazy and I’m thinking too much into it.

John Rambo – Sylvester Stallone – First Blood

John McClane – Bruce Willis – Die Hard

John Shaft – Richard Roundtree – Shaft

John Connor – Edward Furlong – Terminator 2

John Spartan – Sylvester Stallone – Demolition Man

John Wick – Keanu Reaves – John Wick

John Constantine – Keanu Reeves (yes, it was a comic first but I’m including it) – Constantine

John Kruger – Arnold Schwarzenegger – Eraser

John T. Booker – Chuck Norris – Good Guys Wear Black

John Cutter – Wesley Snipes – Passenger 57
