Synapse Films has been one of the most consistent home video labels since their inception in 1997. If you see that Synapse logo on the spine of a DVD or Blu-ray, chances are you will never see the film on the disc look or sound better and there will be a solid collection of special features included. Now they may not have the output of a Scream Factory or a Kino Lorber, but they are literally a 2 man operation. I’m fine waiting years for an anticipated title if it means that when I pick up that eventual disc, I will be hard pressed to ever need to double dip on that title again.
Rue Morgue recently got to speak with Synapse Films president Don May, Jr. on his (and partner Jerry Chandler’s) project as film producer in a film entitled BLACK CIRCLE, directed by Adrian Garcia Bogliano (LATE PHASES) and co-starring Christina Lindberg (THEY CALL HER ONE-EYE).
But the juiciest part of the conversation was May giving horror fans a preview on some upcoming Blu-ray releases from Synapse:
We just finished the first disc of PHENOMENA and the CD and are in the middle of the second, the POPCORN Blu-ray and DVD will be announcing shortly and we’re working on THE VIOLENT SHIT COLLECTION… I’d love to get those three out by the end of the year.
For those of you who were unable to get the limited Steelbook edition Blu-ray of Dario Argento’s 1982 giallo, TENEBRAE, earlier this year, there’s good news. Synapse has just announced they will be releasing the film as a single disc edition for wide release. Coming to both Blu-ray and DVD, TENEBRAE will be available on September 13th
We’ve had Frank Henenlotter’s 1982 cult classic, BASKET CASE, on Blu-ray for a while now (2011 to be precise), but what about the two inspired sequels that Henenlotter made in the early 90s? Well, BASKET CASE fans have cause for celebration. Synapse Films will be releasing 1990s BASKET CASE 2 and 1992’s BASKET CASE 3: THE PROGENY to Blu-ray on August 9th. The first sequel will be presented “in a beautiful high-definition transfer from the original 35mm camera negative, ” while the second’s high-definition transfer will be “from original 35mm vault materials.” In addition, both Blu-rays will be Region-Free!!!
CREEPSHOW, the 1982 horror anthology film, is an undeniable classic. A delightfully-wicked tribute to 1950s horror comics from two masters, director George Romero and the legendary Stephen King, that has gone on to be loved by generations of fans. So, it’s kind of frustrating that Warner Bros. have only released a bare-bones DVD and Blu-ray of CREEPSHOW here in the States. In the UK, a two-disc special edition DVD and a Blu-ray contain a host of special features, including a feature-length documentary produced by Red Shirt Pictures called JUST DESSERTS: THE MAKING OF CREEPSHOW. The only way American fans could see that doc was to buy an import disc and watch it on a region-free player.
One of Dario Argento’s most celebrated giallo films is making its way to Blu-ray in America. Today, Synapse revealed full details and artwork for a limited Steelbook combo pack for the 1982 thriller, TENEBRAE. Anthony Franciosa stars as a mystery writer in Italy promoting his newest novel, while a lunatic is killing those around him, emulating the murders found in his books. John Saxon (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET) and Dario Nicolodi (DEEP RED) co-star. The three-disc set includes a BD and DVD of the film and a CD of the score by former Goblin members, Claudio Simonetti, Fabio Pigmatelli, and Massimo Morante.
